Rainforest Timber Resolutions/Ordinances
Work to pass a rainforest timber ordinance in your town or a resolution in your school or institution.
IN NEW JERSEY: Assist the staff in a campaign to pass a bill to end the use of uncertified rainforest woods by the New Jersey state government and end the funding of municipal projects in the state using state funds for purchasing rainforest wood.
IN NEW YORK: Assist the staff in campaign to end the use of uncertified rainforest woods for boardwalk reconstruction projects in New York City. Organize direct actions, contact media, organize coalitions.
Assist the staff in a campaign to pass a law closing the loopholes in the existing state law that allow for the use of
rainforest woods by municipalities.
Assist the staff in campaigns to compel NYC agencies to end their uses of rainforest woods for boardwalks, sidewalk and park benches, pilings and ferry terminals, piers, docks and subway track ties.
National Waterfronts Initiative
Help us get proactive in stopping the rising demand for rainforest woods in waterfront construction. The intern will expand our existing database of waterfront municipalities and landscape architects and designers across the U.S., coördinate the completion of our brochure/poster and contact municipal officials.
Futon Campaign
The intern will research and organize a campaign to end the imports into the US of futon frames made from endangered rainforest woods.
Safe Sets™
The Rainforests of Broadway
Rainforest Relief has begun a project to end the use of lauan tropical plywood for set construction across the country. The intern will research alternative materials and help organize a show to highlight a set made entirely of environmentally sound materials. This will involve contacting celebrities and those involved in the theatre industry.
Mahogany Is Murder Campaign
The use of mahogany continues to be responsible for destructive logging and road building — and the clearing that ensues — in South America.
RESTAURANTS/BARS: The intern will assist the ongoing campaign to end the use of mahogany and other uncertified rainforest woods by New York City restaurants and bars.
DYING FOR MAHOGANY CAMPAIGN: The intern will research and organize a campaign to end the use of rainforest woods for coffins within NYC and nationally.
RETAIL CHAINS: The intern will research and organize for the ongoing campaign to end the use of mahogany and other rainforest woods by national chain retail stores and restaurants. So far our research has found Hard Rock Cafe, Georgiou, Barney’s New York, TGI Friday’s, Tristan & America, Coach, The Tie Rack, Outdoor Furniture
Help us stop the imports and sales of garden furniture made from wood logged from old growth rainforests. The use of teak, nyatoh, balau, kapur/a>, garapera, jatoba and other woods are steeply on the rise as companies capitalize on the growing popularity of outdoor activities. The intern will help organize Days of Action by reaching out to student and grassroots groups across the country and internationally.
